Your safety online
Leave quickly, and leave fewer traces.
If someone checks your phone or computer, visiting a law firm’s website can put you at risk. Here is what this site does to help, and what you can do yourself.
If you are in danger right now, call 911.
For confidential support at any hour, the National Domestic Violence Hotline is 1-800-799-7233, or text START to 88788. Add your local shelter and helplines here.
Quick exit
What the Quick exit button does
Every page has a Quick exit button at the top, on phones too. Pressing it, or pressing the Esc key twice, replaces this site with a weather website straight away.
The page is replaced, not opened in a new tab, so the Back button does not bring you back here.
It does not delete your browsing history. To do that, follow the steps below.
Practise once, so you know where the button is if you need it.
Your browser
Clear your browsing history
Clearing all history can itself raise questions. Removing only a few pages is often safer.
Chrome: open the menu, choose Delete browsing data, then pick only the pages you want to remove.
Safari on iPhone: open Settings, then Apps, Safari, and Clear History and Website Data.
Safari on Mac: open History, choose Show All History, then delete single entries.
Firefox: open History, choose Manage history, then right-click a page and choose Delete.
Private browsing
Use a private window next time
A private or incognito window does not save history, searches or form entries once you close it. It does not hide your activity from your employer, your internet provider or tracking software installed on the device.
Contacting us
Safer ways to reach us
Use a device the other person cannot access: a friend’s phone, a work computer or a public library.
Tell us on the form if email or voicemail is not safe. We will only contact you the way you choose.
Ask us to use a code word or a different name when we call.
A note on technology
No website can guarantee your safety. If you think your phone or computer is being monitored, a domestic violence advocate can help you make a safety plan.
